When using a self-propelled vertical mast lift (also commonly known as a vertical personnel lift), the following precautions should be observed to ensure operator safety:
Before each use of the self-propelled vertical mast lift, the operator should conduct a thorough inspection of the structural components for damage. This includes checking the mast, platform, guardrails, and chassis for cracks, deformation, or loose fasteners. Check the hydraulic system's hoses, fittings, and cylinders for leaks or damage. Check the battery condition, wiring integrity, and ensure the control panel is functioning correctly. Ensure the tires are in good condition and the braking system is working properly. Verify that the emergency stop button, limit switches, tilt sensor, and pothole protection device are functioning correctly.
When using a vertical mast lift, ensure that the lift is only operated on solid, level ground with a slope of ≤ 2–3°.
Vertical mast lifts are designed for indoor or windless environments and should be avoided for outdoor use.
When operating the vertical mast lift, maintain a safe distance from ceilings, beams, lighting fixtures, and other overhead obstructions.
When working with the self-propelled vertical mast lift, the operator and any tools or items carried must not exceed the equipment's rated load, and only one person is permitted to use it at a time.
Do not stand on the guardrails, toe boards, or use ladders or boxes on the platform to increase height.
